If the vendor is unknown, treat it as OpenJDK, as OpenJDK
now allows every builder to set its own vendor string and
we can't use that to identify them any more.

search code a bit, and eliminate an unnecessary stat() for a directory on
which it has already been called earlier.

could probably blame the international nature of the code but
it is somewhat shameful that this wasn't done before.
